Type setting

Now I know this isn't the most exciting topic for many people...

However, I just wanted to share the kind of work I've being doing recently which involved creating a booklet with at least 12 double page spreads presenting an article of our choice. I have never worked with type like this before and quickly realised that there is a lot we take for granted when it comes to laying out the contents of a page effectively.

The style of my article lent itself to a traditional book format, rather than big expressive type I wanted to present the body text in neat boxes or blocks rather than the sorts of columns you would find in a magazine or newspaper. I used a grid inspired by the Golden Section, aiming to achieve a sense of balance on the page with nine equal rows and the cross-section lines determining where the body text would be placed. This grid can be applied to any page size or dimensions as it works with a ratio rather than specific measurements.

This is how the bulk of the article will be presented in my book and I'm really pleased with how it turned out. There are a lot of rules to adhere to when working with typography and sometimes it seems a little intimidating or even tedious moving things just a hair-space to the left but when it all comes together it's rather satisfying.
